Topical Steroid Withdrawal: The Road to Recovery

Topical Steroid Withdrawal: Healing through Hypnotherapy

Topical steroids are commonly prescribed to relieve inflammation, itching, and redness of the skin. From 1% over the counter hydrocortisone, to 6+ weeks of oral steroids like prednisolone. They work by suppressing the immune response in the affected area. While these drugs are effective in providing relief, they can cause dependence and a host of unpleasant side effects. In some cases, the side effects can be severe and result in a condition called topical steroid withdrawal (TSW).

What is Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?

TSW is a condition that occurs when an individual suddenly stops using topical steroids after long-term use. It is characterized by a rebound reaction, where the skin becomes inflamed, itchy, and red, similar to the initial condition that the steroid was used to treat. The symptoms can last from a few weeks to several months, depending on the severity and duration of the steroid use.

What are the symptoms of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?

The symptoms of TSW can be distressing and disruptive to an individual's quality of life. The common symptoms include:

 - Burning or stinging sensations

- Severe itching

- Flaking or shedding of the skin

- Skin thinning or discoloration

- Dry or cracked skin

- Swollen lymph nodes

- Headaches and fatigue

- Mood swings and depression

- Trouble regulating temperature

- ‘Red sleeves’, redness of the arms stopping at the wrists

Treatments for Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?

The symptoms of TSW can make life miserable, and conventional treatment options often involve re-introducing the steroids, which only leads to further dependence and aggravates the symptoms. Immunosuppressants can also be used, but have their own risks and side effects.

As a hypnotherapist, I specialize in natural healing and recovery from TSW. My approach to healing involves harnessing the power of the mind to encourage natural healing and recovery. My therapy sessions aim to alleviate the symptoms of TSW, reduce dependence on topical steroids, and facilitate long-term healing and recovery.

Healing TSW with Hypnotherapy

Through guided meditation, visualization, and positive affirmations, my clients learn to tune out negative thoughts and channel their energies towards healing. I also work with clients to identify and address the root cause of their TSW, which can be anything from a genetic predisposition to a compromised immune system, or environmental factors.

It’s important to note you cannot ‘cure’ TSW, it’s something that can only fully heal through time, but hypnotherapy can make it easier and more comfortable.
