Before I began working with Jen, I was constantly stuck in survival mode, overwhelmed by the symptoms of fight or flight, particularly during my intense itch attacks. These episodes were unbearable, with my heart racing and waves of panic and anxiety only making the attacks last longer. On top of that, I struggled with horrible insomnia, finding it nearly impossible to fall or stay asleep. She would adapt each trance to the amount of pain I’m in or depending how much time and concentration I had dependent on my ADHD. I felt so encouraged to work on self care outside of sessions too, being given small, manageable tasks for me that help find a little stability and healing in my everyday life. I was also given a great amount of resources, including tapes, scientific information about the brain and self soothing practices to help me access a state of calm even when I’m not in session. “When I first heard about the opportunity to have hypnotherapy, my first thought was that I’d be clucking around the living room like a chicken, waiting for someone to click their fingers and tell me I was “back in the room”. It’s not something I was familiar with, and I was certainly quite skeptical. I’ve never had counselling or any kind of therapy before as the thought of “talking things through” seemed too daunting and something I’ve never felt comfortable with. However, Hypnotherapy is very much solution focused, and emphasis is on the future and moving forward. So, with an open mind, I decided to give it a go. From the first session Jennifer made me feel really at ease and was so down to earth and friendly. I knew straight away that I didn’t have to worry about feeling “weird” or “judged” (something my social anxiety unfortunately lead me to feel daily).
After our first meeting I remember saying to my husband that it was “nice, but I don’t really see how it’s going to make a difference”. However, after about 4 weeks, I started to notice small positive changes. Fast forward 3 months, and I would go as far as to say that I am a completely different person. Jennifer has taught me so much, realizing my self-worth and finally being able to let go of past trauma, which had such a hold over every aspect of my life.
My sleep quality has improved as has my IBS. I have achieved things that I honestly would never have thought possible, something which I cannot thank Jennifer enough for.
I feel strongly that you will get out what you put into the sessions and in between, so commitment and effort is needed. I’ve pushed myself in ways I’ve never done before, but the rewards have been enormous.
Of course, I’m still a work in progress (I think we all are really), but I now have a skill set and range of coping mechanisms to face situations head on which I know I will carry throughout life. “I didn’t know anything about Hypnotherapy until I spoke with Jen. In the past, I had tried CBT and had found it to be successful but at times gruelling, it wasn’t something I particularly enjoyed! However, by contrast I found myself really looking forward to each of my Hypnotherapy sessions. Together we worked on issues of anxiety, low mood and fatigue. I enjoyed the small, but achievable steps and the overall process.
Jen explained about the brain and its functions in the first session, this helped improve my understanding and knowledge of what was happening in my mind and body and therefore it seemed easier to work on issues.
I liked looking forward as a focus and I felt that by concentrating on the small positives within my week, it definitely became easier for me.
