Hypnotherapy: Online VS In-person

Hypnotherapy: Online therapy VS In-person therapy

Did you know online therapy has been shown to be just as effective as in-person therapy?

Online hypnotherapy is considered to be just as effective as in-person therapy for several reasons, primarily due to the nature of hypnotherapy itself and the advancements in technology that facilitate the therapeutic process. This blog lays out the main points to consider regarding online therapy.

The Nature of Hypnotherapy Itself: Hypnotherapy involves guiding a person into a trance-like state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. This state can be achieved regardless of physical location, as the process relies heavily on verbal guidance and the individual's ability to concentrate and relax. It’s a natural state that we all do every day, and we don’t need to be talking to someone in person for this to happen. It’s fair to say that actually all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

Technological Advancements in the Digital World: Advances in technology have made it easier to replicate the in-person experience in an online setting. High-quality video and audio are key. Modern video conferencing tools provide clear video and audio, allowing therapists to observe non-verbal cues and maintain effective communication. If there is a bad connection, without a video stream and with inconsistent audio, then this will impact the therapeutic relationship and process. Many platforms also have interactive features. Platforms often include features such as screen sharing and virtual whiteboards, which can be used to enhance the therapeutic process. I share my screen to show live drawings or resources. Privacy and security are key. Secure and encrypted connections ensure that sessions remain confidential and private, potentially more so than in person therapy where someone you know may see you going to or from therapy settings.

Comfort and Convenience: Online therapy offers several practical benefits that can enhance its effectiveness. Clients can participate in sessions from their own homes, which can make them feel more at ease, comfortable, safe and open during the therapy. Being in a familiar environment can reduce the anxiety some clients might feel when visiting a therapist's office. Elimination of travel. This can make therapy more accessible and reduce the stress and time associated with commuting. It can also save money and make it easier for those juggling work or childcare.

Accessibility and Flexibility: Online hypnotherapy makes it easier for people to access therapy! It removes geographical constraints, allowing clients to work with therapists who are not in their immediate area. I work with clients all over the world. There are, at this time, not many therapists who specialise in skin conditions, such as eczema and TSW (topical steroid withdrawal). Working online means you can access the best therapist for you, no matter where they are! Clients can schedule sessions at times that are most convenient for them too, which can lead to more consistent attendance and engagement.

Empirical Support: Studies have shown that online therapy, including hypnotherapy, can be just as effective as in-person sessions. Research indicates that the outcomes for various psychological issues, such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD, are comparable between online and face-to-face therapy. Think about it, if you do a workout from an app, or do a guided meditation from Youtube, you still get the same benefits.

Therapist Availability: Online platforms can increase the availability of qualified hypnotherapists, giving clients a broader range of options and making it easier to find a therapist who meets their specific needs. It’s really important to find the right match in your therapist, don’t be afraid to ‘shop around’. You might need a couple of free consultations before you find someone you click with. Working online gives you much more choice!

Online hypnotherapy uses core principles of traditional hypnotherapy while taking advantage of today’s technology. It can provide a flexible, accessible, and effective therapeutic option. You listen to hypnosis tracks through Spotify or Soundcloud, so why not live through a laptop? The combination of a comfortable, safe environment, reduced geographical barriers, and empirical support makes online hypnotherapy a brilliant alternative to in-person sessions. If you have a chronic health condition, making it hard to leave the house, or depression so severe you don’t want to drive or get out of bed, or anxiety which means you can’t use public transport, online therapy is always there for you.

Help is always available, even if you can’t get dressed, travel or afford a local therapist.
